I was required to buy this textbook for a class. The main message is good, but the objective and unquantifiable standards at which the author judges human interaction, reeks of superiority and smugness. It is incredibly important to reach and find ways to reach the people you teach. Equally important, is what you reach them with. Having standards and expectations for people isn't a damning sin, nor should it be off limits when instructing others. Setting reasonable expectations and reachable goals are fine to do, and you don't need to have experienced every single culture, gender, race, language, and so on to correctly teach and care for those you teach. The author is neither "smug" nor "preachy," as some of these reviews suggest. Howard very clearly, and respectfully, articulates the ways in which White educators can best serve their students of color. This is a must read for all White educators, be they tenured or fledgling, who are still trying to figure out (or come to terms with) their White identity.
